Municipal Theater " Apollon "

The " Apollon " Municipal Theatre, is located at George Ι’ Square and is characterized as the most impressive architectural ornament of Patras while it is one of the first opera theaters in Europe. It was constructed in 1872, based on the plans of German architect Ernst Ziller and with the financial contribution of the merchants of Patras.

It has three rows of galleries coated with red velvet, a gallery and a parquet. From the first year of its construction , the citizens of Patras had the chance to enjoy melodramatic performances of great composers such as Verdi, Apolloni , Pacini , Richie , Ntonitseli , Bizet as well as operetta. From its scene later passed great Greek theater companies such as the ones of Kotopouli, Myrat, Kybeli, Plessas, while during the carnival it hosted dances and masquerade parties from where in the 1950s it gain its reputation for organising the famous and unique in Greece, " Burburelia". Since 1988 the Municipal Theatre, is the permanent home of Patras Regional Theatre.
